The Science to Experimental Coffees

Why Experimental?

We started Experimental because we wanted to make a coffee company tailored to you: from selecting which farms to partner with and roast profiles that you like the taste of—all within a community of people to experience coffee with. Your collaboration guides our decisions. Come along for the journey.

How we accomplish our mission:

Each Experimental coffee is the result of a collaboration between you, us, and scientists, farmers, and roasters, blending research and artistry. From cultivation to final brew, each choice—from growing techniques to roasting—shapes the coffee’s taste and aroma. By combining scientific insights with hands-on expertise, we offer coffees that surprise and challenge the senses.

Fermentation: New Flavor Dimensions
Fermentation is where we really push the envelope. Farmers and processing experts bring precision to this art and by carefully managing factors like fermentation time, temperature, and yeast selection, they amplify specific flavors—crafting everything from bright, fruity profiles to deep, wine-like complexities. Some beans may undergo extended fermentation, while others benefit from wild yeast strains that infuse unexpected, nuanced notes into each cup.

Botany and Breeding
Exceptional coffee starts with the plant itself, and farmers play a key role by selecting and cultivating coffee varietals bred for unique flavors, increased sweetness, and balanced acidity. Traditional varietals, like Bourbon and Typica, offer classic flavors, while experimental hybrids (F1s) bring bold and complex profiles. These newer varietals are often bred for specific climates and soil conditions, pushing the boundaries of flavor potential.

Precision Roasting
At the roasting stage, our partners rely on data-driven techniques to guide each batch to its full potential. By carefully monitoring temperature and timing, they highlight key flavor elements—balancing acidity, sweetness, and body—while respecting the bean's unique characteristics. Each roast becomes a crafted experience, enhancing what makes each Experimental coffee distinctive.

Sensory Science
Once roasted, we test and evaluate every coffee we offer. We conduct tasting sessions with members of our community to bring you the cutting-edge in coffee.
